    EFFECT OF MUCUNA COCHINCHINENSIS EXTRACTS ON EFFLUX PUMP IN FUNGAL STRAINS

    Objective: To study the efflux pump inhibition activity of Mucunacochinchinensis extracts Methods: Sensitivity assay was performed by Kirby Bauer technique. Effluxing ability of microbe was done by accretion, accumulation and efflux pump assays. Results: Resistant fungal strains were subjected to efflux ability studies. Maximum effluxing ability was determined from the experimental data and it was found to be 105 min and 75 min by Candida albicans for methanolic extract of M. cochinchinenesis (MMC) and ethanolic extract of M. cochinchinensis (EMC) respectively and 45 min and 105 min by Aspergillus niger for MMC and EMC respectively. Profound synergistic effect of inhibition was observed with combined MMC and standard Clotrimoxazole when compared to the standard alone; against C. albicansindicates the modulating efficacy of MMC. Conclusion: M. cochinchinensis extracts showed efflux pump modulating activity

    Transportation of lymph node biopsy specimens in selective Kirchner’s liquid medium for culture of tubercle bacilli

    Lymph node biopsy specimens, obtained from 297 paediatric and adult patients with tuberculous lymphadenitis at Madurai, were transported in selective Kirchner’s liquid medium (KL-T) to the Tuberculosis Research Centre, Madras and processed for culture. Mycobucterium tuberculosis was isolated from 201 (68%) specimens. Of the 192 specimens received within 4 days of resection, 134 (69.8%) yielded M. tuberculosis on culture and of the 105 specimens received after 5 days, 67 (63.8%) were culture positive; the difference was not statistically significant. By incubating KL-T alone further, after removing the gland for processing, it was found that mere contact with the excised node during transportation was enough to retrieve 77 (38.3%) of the total of 201 positive isolates obtained, the delay did not affect the culture positivity rate. Thus, lymph node specimens for culture of tubercle bacilli can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 15 days and transported in KL-T at ambient temperature for 18-20 h without any loss in culture positivity

    Explaining Deep Face Algorithms through Visualization: A Survey

    Although current deep models for face tasks surpass human performance on some benchmarks, we do not understand how they work. Thus, we cannot predict how it will react to novel inputs, resulting in catastrophic failures and unwanted biases in the algorithms. Explainable AI helps bridge the gap, but currently, there are very few visualization algorithms designed for faces. This work undertakes a first-of-its-kind meta-analysis of explainability algorithms in the face domain. We explore the nuances and caveats of adapting general-purpose visualization algorithms to the face domain, illustrated by computing visualizations on popular face models. We review existing face explainability works and reveal valuable insights into the structure and hierarchy of face networks. We also determine the design considerations for practical face visualizations accessible to AI practitioners by conducting a user study on the utility of various explainability algorithms

    Search of the Orion spur for continuous gravitational waves using a loosely coherent algorithm on data from LIGO interferometers

    We report results of a wideband search for periodic gravitational waves from isolated neutron stars within the Orion spur towards both the inner and outer regions of our Galaxy. As gravitational waves interact very weakly with matter, the search is unimpeded by dust and concentrations of stars. One search disk (A) is 6.87° in diameter and centered on 20h10m54.71s+33°33′25.29′′, and the other (B) is 7.45° in diameter and centered on 8h35m20.61s−46°49′25.151′′. We explored the frequency range of 50–1500 Hz and frequency derivative from 0 to −5×10−9  Hz/s. A multistage, loosely coherentsearch program allowed probing more deeply than before in these two regions, while increasing coherence length with every stage. Rigorous follow-up parameters have winnowed the initial coincidence set to only 70 candidates, to be examined manually. None of those 70 candidates proved to be consistent with an isolated gravitational-wave emitter, and 95% confidence level upper limits were placed on continuous-wave strain amplitudes. Near 169 Hz we achieve our lowest 95% C.L. upper limit on the worst-case linearly polarized strain amplitude h0 of 6.3×10−25, while at the high end of our frequency range we achieve a worst-case upper limit of 3.4×10−24 for all polarizations and sky locations
